Many people are confused by the Thermal Interface Materials when they chose them for their LED lighting,they may heard too many names--thermal paste&thermal grease&thermal compound&thermal glue&thermal adhesive etc.-- about this kind of material and hard to make a decision.
 
We use this material to fill the small gaps between the metal heat sink and the heat sources(chips&leap beads),then transfer the heat of the sources to the heat sink. Generally speaking,higher thermal conductivity means better performance,but there are also different test methods,for example, thermal pad is solid and thermal paste is compound, their thermal conductivity based on different criterions.
 
1.Thermal paste (HY410&HY510&HY810&HY880)
 
Thermal paste is also called thermal grease&thermal compound, main components are silicone compounds and metal oxide compounds,it is common TIM for most of the electric parts heating, many kinds and brands are available,and there are many different choices with different prices and performances.White and gray are the general color for thermal paste. For example, Halnziye HY400 white series for the low power LED PCB like 10W or 20W, and HY810 gray series good for high power LED PCB like 80W or 100W or LED COB. 
 
2.Thermal glue (HY910)
 
Thermal glue with both performances of thermal conductivity and adhesive,it is the best material for the LED/heat sink which no screws, but because of the both performances,thermal conductive materials are less then thermal paste, not good thermal performance as thermal paste.
 
3.Thermal pad (HY100)
 
Main materials of thermal pad are similar as thermal paste, but it is solid silicone pad,it is good filler for the different gaps of the LED lighting with different thicknesses, insulation&shock absorbing with different sharps and thicknesses, and easy to apply and moving.But as the solid material, not too good thermal conductivity, and generally speaking, more thinner and softer thermal pad with better thermal transfer performance. Thickness from 0.3mm to 10mm and normal size is 200*400mm.
 
4.Thermal adhesive tape (HY150)
 
Solid thermal adhesive tape, thinner than thermal pad and with adhesive, it can be called the thinner combination of thermal glue&thermal pad, it is very thin with thickness 0.13mm to 0.3mm(or little more),good to adhesive electric parts with no screws and small parts,but please remember to clean the parts’ surface when you use it
 
5.Thermal phase change tape (HY180)
 
Thermal phase change tape change the phase with the temperature changing, phase-transition temperature is about 50 ℃,it can transfer much heating when the phase changing. good thermal conductivity,but with high cost and not easy to store,short life span.
 
Each type of thermal interface material has its advantage, for thermal conductivity, it is general like--thermal paste>thermal phase change tape>thermal glue>thermal adhesive tape>thermal pad. But with cost effective&heat sink designing&applying and moving etc., you can have a comparison about them when you have different demands with your LED lighting.
